WWIVNet 1@2750 ≡ WWIVLink 1@12754
1. Description
ELLNET replaces the file LNET.EXE distributed with the WWIV
networking software. The standard LNET allows the user to
move through the file in the forward direction only; shows
and deletes messages; and truncates a scrambled file.
ELLNET has a full-screen interface which allows network
messages to be selected from a list, in any order. In
addition to the view and delete functions, messages can be
rerouted to another recipient, extracted to a file, have
their type changed (for example, a post can be changed to
email or vice versa, or sent to a different sub.) The
registered version allows the message text itself to be
edited, the sender's number and system to be changed, and
the same message to be sent to multiple systems.
The original LNET must be run from within WWIV to process color
codes correctly; ELLNET does not have this limitation.
2. Requirements
ELLNET has been tested with WWIV 4.22 multinet and net32.
It will work with older versions: you can give a complete
pathname to the *.NET file.
ELLNET requires a color video card - CGA EGA or VGA.
3. Installation
Simply place ELLNET.EXE in your main BBS directory. There is
no configuration file needed other than WWIV's CONFIG.DAT and
NETWORKS.DAT (in the data directory). Set the environmental
variable EDITOR to your favorite text editor (this is optional):
C:\> SET EDITOR=C:\BIN\Q.EXE or
C:\> SET EDITOR=C:\DOS\EDIT.COM
(It's best to place this command in AUTOEXEC.BAT, as other programs
may use the same variable). It will attempt to invoke QEDIT by
default.
4. Execution
If you are running WWIV 4.21a or higher, go to the directory with
CONFIG.DAT. The syntax is:
ELLNET filename [.x]
where filename is a *.NET file (such as S2750.NET or P1.NET) and
the optional parameter .x indicates the number of your network.
(such as .0 .1 .2 etc.). Network zero (the first one described in
INIT) is the default. You may also set the WWIV_NET environmental
variable. The ".NET" extension after the filename is optional.
If CONFIG.DAT is not found it will be assumed that the filename
specified on the command line is the full path name. This also
occurs when it is used with an old version of WWIV. (If using an
old version, try "ELLNET DATA\FILENAME")
ELLNET s2751 /* to @2751 in my first net, WWIVnet */
ELLNET s12750 .1 /* to @12750 in my second net, WWIVLink */
ELLNET p1 /* file that has not yet been merged into s*.net */
ELLNET DEAD .1 /* Black Hole of WWIVLink */
ELLNET s3950.NET .0 /* ".NET" and ".0" are optional */
5. Using ELLNET
If all goes well, you should see a screen with a large blue-green
box, containing descriptions of the first twenty messages within
the file. The red bar indicates the current message. You can
use the following keys:
Arrows, PgUp PgDn, Home End: move the bar (PgDn: next 20 msgs)
ENTER: View this message F1 : Help
DEL : Delete this message F10 : Shell to DOS
Q : Quit
alt-E: Edit this message
alt-X: eXtract to a file
6. The Editor
alt-E allows you to change several of the parameters of the message.
These include the target user/system, major and minor types, name
of recipient or sub (if email by name or named sub post). With the
registered version, you can also edit the message text, title,
and sender's address, and specify a list of systems to send a message
to as multi-mail.
ENTER and TAB move you between fields within the editor. Press ESC
to quit and save, or ctrl-A to abort without saving. Any other key
will edit that field: if pressed within a blue field, you may type
the new value there. If pressed within a grey field, the appropriate
item will be extracted to a file and your text editor (see section
3 above) will be invoked. Modify here and save. If you change your
mind about editing this item, exit the editor without making changes-
the original file must be preserved! That is to say, whatever the
temporary file looks like when you leave the editor will become the
new contents of the message.
Changes to blue fields take effect immediately. Changes to other
fields take effect when you exit ELLNET. (This is because only the
blue fields are a fixed length)
Note: to avoid possible security problems and violations of network
policy such as anonymous mail or forged sender addresses, all
messages that have their contents or fromuser/sys fields
altered in this way will have a tagline attached indicating
that it was altered with ELLNET.
7. Registration
Registered users can edit everything. Registration is only $10!
Surely it's worth that much! Send checks to:
Matt Hucke / 205 E Clark #104 / Champaign IL 61820
Create an account for me ("Starship Trooper") on your system and tell
me the password, (last 4 PH: is '4502') and I will call and upload
the registered version. Or add two dollars to get a disk by US Mail.
(Authors of quality shareware programs may register my copies of their
own programs instead... pre-approval required.)

9. Beta-testers
Thanks to The Music Man 1@2751, Tigger 20@2750 and Cthulhu 1@2752 for
playing with this thing before release.
10. Other TrooperWare products (all available on my system)
STxxx.MOD : series of WWIV mods (free)

PRSV 2.01a : Menu-driven print server for Novell networks. Used by
the University of Illinois.
11. Bugs
Compressed messages may be viewed, but the current ELLNET does not
have the capability to encode/decode.
